The sun of Vergina, as it is popularly known today, is typically a 16-pointed star (can also be 12-point or 8-point) used widely by the Ancient Greeks and adopted by the Macedonians as their royal insignia. The sixteen points represent the four elements (earth, fire, water and air) as descried by Aristotle and the twelve primary forces or 'neters' of the universe personified as the famous Olympian dodecadon (Zeus, Artemis, Aphrodite, Apollo, Poseidon etc). |
